Creating a Culture of Patient-Centered Care – Assessment and Screening for Substance Use Disorders in the Primary Care Setting
This session is presented by FNU faculty members Beki Asti, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, CNE and Nancy Pesta Walsh, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC
The National Survey on Drug Use and Abuse report found that 1 in 12 American adults have a substance use disorder. In order to address the epidemic of substance abuse disorders, primary care nurse practitioners must universally assess, screen, and diagnose all clients. Participants in this session will explore evidence-based substance abuse assessment, screening, and diagnostic tools.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will be able to identify common substance use disorders seen in the primary care setting.
- Participants will be able to have an understanding of screening tools used for substance use disorders in the primary care setting.
- Attendees will have a basic understanding of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders.

Presenters
Beki Asti, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, CNE
Dr. Beki Asti is an Assistant Professor at Frontier Nursing University. She earned her Master’s in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Frontier Nursing University, a Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Concordia University of Wisconsin, and a Post-Masters Certificate as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Frontier Nursing University. She has worked in various outpatient clinics as a Family Nurse Practitioner along with working as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in a Community Mental Health Clinic. She has used her clinical and academic experience to care for patients with substance use disorders.
Nancy Pesta Walsh, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC
Dr. Nancy Pesta Walsh is an Assistant Professor at Frontier Nursing University. She earned her Master’s in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and Doctorate in Nursing at Frontier Nursing University, and a Post-Doctoral Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Brandman. She has worked in primary care and urgent care as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in a Community Behavioral Health Clinic.
