Move Your Community Toward Improved Health: Expanding Your Role with a Psych-Mental Health or Family Nursing Specialty

Midwives don’t just provide maternity care and attend births. Many midwives are taking their career a step further to ensure they are prepared to take care of the entire family and to provide not only primary and maternity care but also the mental health of the women they serve. As healthcare needs and the system change, the modern midwife will have a larger role to play in women’s healthcare and health of the entire family in the U.S.

Speakers

Heather Schlosser

Heather Shlosser is an Assistant Professor and Interim Program Director FNU PMHNP program and has served on the faculty at Frontier Nursing University since April 2012. Dr. Shlosser has authored several book chapters with a psychiatric focus as well as alternative care models in primary care. She is board certified as both a family nurse practitioner and a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Her current clinical practice is a collaborative practice between integrative behavioral health and primary care steeped in functional medicine. Her clinical experience includes full-scope primary care and out-patient psychiatric care including substance use treatment across the lifespan. Dr. Shlosser has a teaching focus in primary care, psychiatric care in the primary care setting and advanced pharmacology. Dr. Shlosser earned her undergraduate degree in nursing from the Elms College in Massachusetts, a Master of Science degree from Frontier Nursing University, a Post Master’s of Science from the University of Virginia and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Virginia.

Rhonda Arthur – DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC, FNP-BC, CNE

Rhonda Arthur completed her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Case Western Reserve University. She completed her certifications in Nurse Midwifery, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner at the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. Rhonda has worked in rural primary care and is currently serving in rural and underserved community members through the New River Health District Health Department. Rhonda is an active volunteer and worked with Midwives for Haiti, JP HRO in Haiti, Apple Ridge Farm – Helping Children grow program, as well as the Virginia Medical Reserve team. Rhonda had taught at Frontier Nursing University for ten years and was Program Director for Frontier Nursing University for five years. She has worked extensively with clinical students and preceptors. Dr. Arthur has presented at professional conferences both on the state and national level about precepting clinical students and problem solving. In addition to Teaching at FNU and her clinical job, Rhonda teaches pelvic exams to Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine medical students in Blacksburg Virginia.

Julie Paul

Julie Paul, DNP, CNM, FACNM obtained her BSN from Saint Anselm College. She started her career as an L&D nurse and continued in that position for 14 years before obtaining her MSN. She graduated Frontier Nursing School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in 2006 from the CNEP program. She then went into a full scope midwifery practice. In 2011 she graduated from Frontier Nursing University with a DNP. Upon graduation from FNU, Julie joined FNU as an assistant profession for 3 years. During her time at Frontier she was the Course Coordinator of the Advanced Antepartum Course. In addition to working at FNU, Julie was also working as a CNM hospitalist at South Shore Hospital. Currently, she is the co-director of the midwifery program at SSH. In her free time she enjoys boxing, paddle boarding and spending time with her family.

Tonya Nicholson

Tonya Nicholson, DNP, CNM,, WHNP- BC, CNE, FACNM is the Associate Dean of Midwifery and Women’s Health for Frontier Nursing University. She has a rich history with FNU as a 1999 graduate for midwifery, the first DNP graduate in 2009, and a WHNP graduate in 2011. Tonya served the women of central Florida in full scope practice from 2000-2006 where she also directed the midwifery service. In 2006, she joined the Frontier faculty and then became the Program Director in 2010 and the Associate Dean in 2015. Tonya currently practices part time in her hometown of Dublin, GA. She has a variety of teaching experience, but the majority has been focused on the prenatal period and in clinical courses. Tonya is very interested in communication and civility at the individual and institutional levels and focuses most of her scholarship in this area.
