Daily Theme: Caring for Rural, Diverse and Underserved Populations

This session will highlight the work of nurse Maude Callen who provided care the poor, and women of color in the South from 1920-1970’s. The presentation will focus on cultural competency when providing care to communities of color and vulnerable, underserved populations.

Speakers

Nena Harris

Nena R. Harris, PhD, FNP-BC, CNM is an Assistant Professor at Frontier Nursing University and a Family Nurse Practitioner at Shelter Health Services, a free clinic for homeless women and children in Charlotte, NC. She has been a Nurse Practitioner since 2005 and a CNM since 2006.

Dr. Harris received her PhD, MSN (FNP), and BSN at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. She received her nurse-midwifery training at Frontier Nursing University. She also has a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Davidson College in Davidson, NC.

Her clinical experience as a nurse ranges from infectious disease, labor and delivery in hospital and birth center settings, and working with underserved populations. Today, Dr. Harris spends the majority of her time teaching the women’s health and childbearing course at FNU and working clinically with homeless women and children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and 4 kids, reading classic literature and historical fiction, and getting to know the family’s three new bunnies, all named after characters in children’s literature.
