SUMMARY:LIVE CE SESSION Nursing Leadership\, Building the Future
DESCRIPTION:This session is sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau and presented by Joyce M. Knestrick\, PhD\, CRNP\, FAANP\, FAAN. \nAs healthcare continues to change\, nurse practitioners (NPs) are well suited to be the “movers and shakers” to impact policy and health reforms. As nurse leaders\, NPs bring experiences to improve social determinants of health and are often the voice of the diverse patients they serve. The removal of barriers to practice in federal and state legislation and local health systems are only part of the breaking down barriers. Readiness to meet the challenges comes after reflection on personal self and the profession. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Describe the current state of NP practice in the US and why nursing leadership is essential.\n2. Analyze the role of the Nurse Practitioner in the implementation of The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.\n3. Propose ways to remove barriers to practice in federal\, state\, and local health systems. \nThis education activity is pending approval by Frontier Nursing University of up to 1.0 hours of accredited education. PLEASE NOTE: You must attend the live session to be eligible for CE credit.  \nI’m Interested! \nZoom Details\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nMeeting ID: 828 0593 0783\nPasscode: 399406 \nPresenter\nDr. Joyce Knestrick\, Ph.D.\, FNP-BC\, FAANP\, FAAN \nDr. Joyce Knestrick\, Ph.D.\, FNP-BC\, FAANP\, FAAN\, is a professor at George Washington University and she is a past president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Knestrick practices as a primary care provider in rural Appalachia caring for low-income and underserved populations. She has been a family nurse practitioner for over 30 years\, a nurse educator for over 35 years and is active in maintaining high-quality education for NPs. Her research is focused on health and access to care for low-income and rural populations\, particularly women; nurse practitioner workforce issues; and distance education for NPs.

SUMMARY:Living the Dream as a Nurse Practitioner (Recorded Session)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nThis recorded session will be available on November 15. This is a panel discussion with Donna Brunson\, PMHNP; Dr. Charles Davis\, PhD\, MSN\, FNP-C\, RN; Dr. Torica T. Fuller\, DNP\, MSN\, FNP-BC\, FNP-C\, WHNP-BC\, CDP\, CGRN\, CPN\, NRCME; and Kaitlyn Rychlowski\, MSN\, APNP\, PMHNP-BC\, PMH-C. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Joanne Keefe\, DNP\, MPH\, FNP-c\, CNE.  \nObtaining a professional dream takes vision\, resilience and tenacity. This panel of nurse practitioners pursued advanced nursing education to reach their career goals and have a greater impact on the health of their communities. From various backgrounds and specialties\, these nurse practitioners will inspire as they share why they answered the call and what it takes to get there. \nThis is a recorded session. \n \n \nAfter the session\, please share your feedback. \nPlease share your feedback here \nPanelists\nDonna Brunson\, PMHNP \nI am currently a board-certified Psychiatric nurse practitioner. I received my associate in nursing Del Mar College in Corpus Christi\, TX. Received my bachelor’s in nursing from Incarnate Word University\, In San Antonio\, TX. I received my master’s degree in Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at Mid-Western State University in Wichita Falls. I am currently working on my doctorate at Capella University. I have been in mental health for over 15 years. \nWhen I think of my dream to be a nurse\, I cast my mind back to growing up in a home with two alcoholics who did not have an education. My father never went beyond the third grade\, and he could not read and write. My mother never got beyond the eighth grade and had difficulty with reading. As a child I only attended school from the first grade to the fifth grade. We were often homeless\, and schooling was not a priority. My eight siblings and I did not even understand or realize what we were missing. When I was in my early thirties\, I decided to get my GED and go to school. I can be frank and say the GED was exceedingly difficult\, I had to take the test twice. I have the idea to become a nurse for several years. \nI finally took that leap\, which was the most terrifying thing in the world to me at that time. My inspiration to get an education was fueled by the love of my children and the good support and encouragement of a close friend and my spouse. This was a huge step for me. I had only worked as a housekeeper and a janitor in my life. I can be honest and say I was extremely excited but so terrified to stand on the campus of a college. I remember thinking how beautiful the campus was and how green the grass was. I remember thinking I am just not as smart as the other people here. Over the next several years\, spending over one hundred hours in the math labs in the English writing labs\, I remember so many good instructors and the encouragement from them. I was able to become a registered nurse and then receive my bachelor’s degree and then receive my master’s degree in psychiatry. I am currently working on my doctorate. As it looks down that road in the past and the road to the future. I am living that dream. and I am grateful every day for it. My biggest joy is working as a nursing instructor passing on that love of education and love of being a nurse practitioner. \nDr. Charles Davis\, PhD\, MSN\, FNP-C\, RN \nCharles (Charlie) R. Davis (Class 154\, 2019) is a Family Nurse Practitioner with Vassar College (Poughkeepsie\, NY) and a Nurse with Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School (Croton-on-Hudson\, NY). In addition\, Charlie is the author and primary investigator of numerous healthcare related presentations\, publications and inventions. Charlie says\, ” I didn’t find Frontier\, Frontier Nursing University found me. Frontier was presented to me as part of my undergraduate nursing studies at Stony Brook University where nursing luminaries and pioneers\, such as Mrs. Mary Breckinridge\, were discussed.  I knew at that moment\, Frontier Nursing University was my school of choice for advanced healthcare education.”  As an example of Frontier Nursing University’s ethos’ influence and Mrs. Breckinridge’s inspirational impact on Charlie\, he conceived\, assembled and led a disparate team of school leaders\, healthcare administrators\, philanthropic organizations\, and local\, state and national politicians that resulted in the construction and opening of the 1st School-Based Health Center in the Mid-Hudson Valley Region of New York State in the spring of 2022.  Although the Webutuck School-Based Health Center is open to all students\, its focus is on meeting the primary healthcare needs of the district’s significant population of underserved\, underinsured and most vulnerable youth. \nDr. Torica T. Fuller\, DNP\, MSN\, FNP-BC\, FNP-C\, WHNP-BC\, CDP\, CGRN\, CPN\, NRCME \nDr. Torica T. Fuller is a resident of Raeford\, North Carolina (NC). Presently\, she serves on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) and she is currently the founder and chair of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) section of North Carolina Public Health Association (NCPHA). She was the Co-Chair of the Academic Practice section of NCPHA serving from 2020 to 2022. On a personal note\, Dr. Fuller has been married for the past 24 years to Dr. Taijuan O. Fuller. \nKaitlyn Rychlowski\, MSN\, APNP\, PMHNP-BC\, PMH-C \nKaitlyn Rychlowski is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who practices in rural Wisconsin\, serving adults living in underserved communities. Kaitlyn is certified in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International\, where she also serves on the Wisconsin Chapter Board of Directors and volunteers as a coordinator connecting perinatal women and families to support\, education\, and resources. SUMMARY:FREE CE SESSION - The Second Victim Experience: Caring for our Own
DESCRIPTION:Add event to calendar \n \nThis CE session\, presented by Adjunct Associate Professor Dr. Susan Scott\, is sponsored by FNU’s Chi Pi chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. \nToday’s healthcare workforce has faced many clinical challenges. Most clinicians adjust well to the variety of demands encountered during an emotionally charged clinical event. However\, emotional stress can cause the individual to experience what is now known as the ‘second victim phenomenon.’ Realizing the impact of this experience and recognizing the need for supportive interventions is critically important to help safeguard a healthy recovery. This presentation provides insights into the lived experience and interventional support that helps to ensure support strategies are readily available for members of our healthcare workforce. \nObjectives:\n1. Describe the ‘second victim’ phenomenon.\n2. Recognize high-risk clinical events that could evoke a second victim response.\n3. Describe a comprehensive institutional approach that offers holistic support for their healthcare workforce. \nThis activity is approved for 1.0 contact hour(s) of continuing education by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners®. Activity ID# 22095744. This activity was planned in accordance with AANP Accreditation Standards and Policies. This activity has been approved through October 31\, 2023. \nZoom Details: \nhttps://frontier.zoom.us/j/85380750561?pwd=K21zVGJXRHFGWlg0ZzhRZVg1dDZkUT09\nMeeting ID: 853 8075 0561\nPasscode: 930057 \nClick Here to Register \nPost-test Link \nPresenter\nSusan D. Scott\, PhD\, RN\, CPPS\, FAAN\nSusan D. Scott\, PhD\, RN\, CPPS\, FAAN\, has practiced the art and science of nursing in various clinical settings\, including Neonatal ICU\, Neonatal/Pediatric critical care transport\, ambulatory pediatrics\, risk management\, and patient safety. Sue currently works as Nurse Scientist at the University of Missouri Health Care and serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of Nursing at Sinclair School of Nursing. She has been a member of the Sigma Theta Tau’s Alpha Iota Chapter since 1984. Her clinical interest involves healthcare workforce well-being and the design of institutional support networks to address clinician support in the aftermath of emotionally challenging events. SUMMARY:Family-centered Care in a Rural\, School-based Health Center
DESCRIPTION:Daily Theme: Collaborating for Family-Centered Care \nIn South Africa\, families have deficient knowledge of early childhood development. Families are often not included in their child’s health care decisions. The new\, school-based health center had no wellness visits\, family-centered care model or health education in place prior to the intervention. The project aim was to increase family-centered care by 30% by engaging in open communication with parents and guardians of children under six at the school-based health center over 90 days. \nFour iterative Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles tested change through team engagement\, patient engagement\, form utilization and wellness visit completion. The Bright Futures guidelines were chosen as comprehensive pediatric preventive care tools with supplemental resources promoting team and family engagement. \nBy the end of the 90-day project\, team capacity\, confidence and attitudes towards the project increased by 43.8%. Documentation of family concerns achieved the 50% goal and experience of care indicated feelings of respect and partnership. Anticipatory guidance documentation greatly surpassed the goal by 43.8% and 62.5% respectively. Fifteen percent of children received wellness visits\, achieving the goal. Family-centered care and open communication were achieved through team engagement\, anticipatory guidance instruction\, and implementation of wellness visits. \nThe session video will be available on this page at the scheduled date and time. \n \nAfter the session\, please share your feedback by clicking the button below. \nPlease share your feedback here \n\nSpeakers\nLindsey Berson\nLindsey Berson\, DNP\, APRN\, FNP-C completed her MSN and DNP through Frontier Nursing University. SUMMARY:Delivering Hope: The role of education in preparing advanced practice nurses in palliative and EOL care
DESCRIPTION:Daily Theme: Collaborating for Family-Centered Care \nThe similarities between birth and death are striking. There is a sacredness in being in the presence of someone taking their first and last breath. Advocates for both insist they are natural processes that deliver hope\, empower patients\, while avoiding distress. However\, rather than embracing this concept\, palliative and EOL care has been stigmatized in the United States and is most evident in the training of healthcare providers. \nIt is estimated that there is a shortage of 6\,000-8\,000 trained providers in palliative care. The World Health Organization indicates lack of awareness and training in palliative care is a barrier to quality care. Education in palliative care is needed for all providers at three levels: basic\, intermediate and specialist. Unfortunately\, medical and nursing schools only spend approximately 15 hours on end-of-life education. \nIn today’s current healthcare environment this lack of training translates into unnecessary interventions\, increased cost and poor outcomes. Advanced practice nurses need to lead the charge to increase education in palliative and EOL care. As leaders\, we can inform patients\, families\, and other health professionals about the benefits of palliative care and available services and supports which will improve outcomes and transform how we care for our patients. \nThe session video will be available on this page at the scheduled date and time. \n \nAfter the session\, please share your feedback by clicking the button below. \nPlease share your feedback here \n\nSpeakers\nDr. Elena Prendergast\nElena Prendergast\, DNP\, APRN\, FNP-C is a graduate of the ADN to MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program at Frontier Nursing University.
