Daily Theme: Growing as Leaders Through Education and Practice
Although ethical content is required for all levels of nursing education, it frequently gets short shrift. Social justice is the branch of ethics that addresses the justice of relations between groups, such as populations, programs, policies and organizations. Likewise, although nursing as a profession has a commitment to social justice, this branch of ethics also often gets short shrift in nursing education. And, we know very little about the best way to teach it. Students also sometimes find ethical content too far removed from “real” nursing, not clinically focused enough, and social justice even farther removed.
Similarly, although the ethics of populations and policies, advocacy, and particularly social justice form part of the DNP Program, DNP students sometimes find these population focused policy skills intimidating, foreign to their clinical expertise. Yet, as nurse leaders, expertise in policy and understanding of social justice will be crucial to their success.
In this session, we will review what we know about the challenges of teaching social justice and policy in the Frontier DNP program. Participants and the presenter will identify lessons learned for teaching policy, advocacy and social justice.

An academic clinician, Victoria Baker, PhD, CNM, CPH has focused on health equity and vulnerable populations, working in agencies serving culturally diverse populations, consulting in teaching health equity, serving on academic committees to increase diversity, and presenting on incorporating issues of diversity into teaching and practice. She has taught undergraduate and graduate students as an advisor, clinical instructor, course coordinator, course designer, and faculty team leader, in online and face-to-face courses. Currently, she teaches master’s and doctor of nursing practice students online for Frontier Nursing University. She also has worked as a director of a university-based midwifery practice, public health consultant, certified nurse-midwife, and representative of a non-governmental organization in Central America.
