Dismantling Implicit Bias to Promote Optimal Health Outcomes

This session is presented by FNU Faculty Members Dr. Katheryn Arterberry, Dr. Diane John and Dr. Lisa Chappell

This session focuses on the negative impact of implicit bias on optimizing health outcomes. Advanced practice nurses will begin to identify a process for changing attitudes and behaviors which contribute to health disparities. Participants can expect to engage in a reflective and introspective approach while developing a plan to minimize personal biases.

Presenters

Katheryn Arterberry, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC
Dr. Katheryn Arterberry currently serves as the clinical director of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Frontier Nursing University. Dr. Arterberry graduated from Northwestern State University (NSU) with a BSN and MSN and received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from The University of Alabama. Dr. Arterberry began her career in Labor and Delivery where she worked for many years. Upon graduating with her Family Nurse Practitioner degree (1994) she worked in a busy family practice clinic. Dr. Arterberry is active in professional nursing organizations; serves as a CCNE evaluator, active member of the Beta Chi and Chi Pi Chapters of STTI, is a fellow of the STTI Maternal Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy and served as faculty for over 10 years. Dr. Arterberry is also a member of the Shreveport District Nurses Association, Louisiana State Nurses Association, ANA, Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners and AANP. Volunteering and mentorship are high on her list of priorities and she can be found at MLKHC serving as a nurse practitioner for an underserved population or mentoring colleagues as they are challenged with professional next steps. Her active schedule includes numerous church activities, community and professional presentations, and civic involvement.
Diane John, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, CNE
Dr. Diane Y. John is an Associate Professor with Frontier Nursing University and is currently working with Academic Affairs as the curriculum and course design coach. Dr. John earned her degree, Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, from Barry University, in Miami, FL. Her dissertation was philosophically grounded in phenomenology and focused on nursing education. She has been employed with FNU since 2012 and has dedicated 20 years of her professional career to teaching in an academic setting. Her scholarly accomplishments have focused on a variety of topics, which include: Nursing education, technology, women’s health, leadership, health policy, and primacy care issues. Throughout her career, she has served on dissertation committees, organization boards, and academic committees.
Lisa Chappell, PhD, FNP-BC, CRNP
Dr. Lisa Chappell is the Chair for the Department of Family Nursing for Frontier Nursing University. She has worked as faculty at Frontier Nursing University since January 2009 and has been the Department Chair since 2014. Dr. Chappell has been a nurse for 45 years, including 25 years as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Auburn University, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham as a Maternal-Infant Nurse Specialist and a second MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned a PhD in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia in 2007. Her clinical practice experience as a nurse practitioner includes rural clinics, emergency medicine, student health, a psychiatric facility, and correctional medicine. Dr. Chappell has over 22 years of teaching experience mostly at the graduate level with nurse practitioners.
