Presented by Southern Cross Insurance Solutions
This recorded session will be available on November 13. Presented by Dr. Thomas George, DNP, CRNP, FNP-C, NASM-CPT/WLS.
The prevalence of obesity has increased to pandemic proportions, and more healthcare providers are needed to combat this complex, progressive, chronic, and relapsing disease. Obesity is associated with or increases the risk of over 230 conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart disease, and more. New pharmacological agents are proving to be game changers in the evidence-based treatment of obesity…and even more effective molecules are in the pipeline. This course will provide the “basics” for improving the evidence-based treatment of obesity.
1. Understand the basic pathophysiology, prevalence, and impact of obesity.
2. Examine the current evidence-based guidelines and recommendations for treating obesity
3. Describe the primary pillars for treating obesity: nutrition, behavioral health, physical activity, and pharmacological interventions
4. Discuss weight stigma and bias in healthcare

Dr. Thomas George, DNP, CRNP, FNP-C, NASM-CPT/WLS
Dr. Thomas George is an assistant professor at Frontier Nursing University and a family nurse practitioner specializing in treating people with obesity. His doctoral work focused on bringing evidence-based, patient-centered treatment of obesity into the front lines of primary care. Dr. George completed the Certificate of Advanced Education in Obesity Medicine with the Obesity Medicine Association and a Certificate of Obesity Management in Primary Care with The Obesity Society. He is also a certified personal trainer and weight loss specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. As a former CEO of a busy, ten-provider family medicine and obstetric practice, Dr. George successfully launched an obesity-specific service line that grew into its own clinic. Currently, he is building a new practice that “looks like a small fitness center with a teaching kitchen, great coffee, and a few exam rooms.” (Optional: Obesity is more than a professional passion; it is personal as well. Thomas continues to battle the chronic disease of obesity and maintains a nearly 100 lb weight loss after weight gain from a traumatic brain injury.)
