John Dewey, an American philosopher stated, “We do not learn from experience…we learn from reflecting on experience.” This presentation will focus on the use of reflective practice to enhance leadership skills, improve interpersonal relationships, and heighten personal self-awareness in nurses. The presentation will provide practical reflective practice tools for nurses in various settings.
At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:- Define reflective practice
- Identify two methods of reflection useful in improving leadership skills
- Apply reflective practice to a leadership case study

Katheryn Arterberry, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC
Dr. Arterberry graduated from Northwestern State University (NSU) with a BSN and MSN in 1985 and 1994 respectively. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from The University of Alabama in August 2010.
Dr. Arterberry began her career in Labor and Delivery where she worked for many years. Upon graduating with her Family Nurse Practitioner degree (1994) she worked in a busy family practice clinic. Currently employed as a member of the Frontier Nursing University graduate faculty she has previously taught at Grambling State University and at Northwestern State University of Louisiana in the undergraduate and graduate programs. She currently serves as the clinical director of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Frontier Nursing University.
Dr. Arterberry is active in professional nursing organizations; serves as a CCNE evaluator, serves on the board of the Beta Chi Chapter of STTI, is a fellow of the STTI Maternal Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy and now serves as faculty, is also a member of Shreveport District Nurses Association, Louisiana State Nurses Association, ANA, Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners and AANP.
Volunteering and mentorship are high on her list of priorities and she can be found at MLKHC serving as a nurse practitioner for an underserved population or mentoring colleagues as they are challenged with professional next steps.
Her active schedule includes numerous church activities, community and professional presentations, and civic involvement. Married for 36 years to Roderic, mother of 2 daughters Janica and Meagan, a son-in-law Dexter, a precious granddaughter named Genesis and an active grandson named Eli.
